Type Deciduous
Native range The eastern and central United States, from the Appalachians west to the Great Plains and south to Texas and Georgia. It grows best in deep, rich, well-drained soil.
Roots A deep taproot when young, with wide spreading side roots. Roots release juglone, a natural chemical that can harm some nearby plants.

Storm risk mediumThe wood is strong, but large trees can have heavy limbs, and trees stressed by drought or disease can drop branches. Trees affected by thousand cankers disease decline and can become hazardous.

Typical ranges, not guarantees. Soil, water, space and care change how a tree grows. Storm risk is our general rating for the species, not an inspection.

Caring for a black walnut

Best time to prune

Prune in the dormant season to remove dead, crossing and weak branches. Prune young trees to form one straight leader if the tree is grown for timber.

Avoid pruning

Avoid heavy pruning and large cuts on mature trees. In areas with thousand cankers disease, follow local quarantine rules on moving walnut wood.

More on timing: when to prune trees.

  • Black walnut releases juglone, which can harm plants such as tomatoes, potatoes, blueberries and some others. Plant sensitive plants well away from the tree and its root zone.
  • Nut husks stain skin and concrete. Wear gloves and clean up fallen nuts quickly.
  • Squirrels love the nuts, so expect some mess and nuts buried in the lawn.
  • Leaves that yellow and drop early in late summer can be normal or a sign of drought or disease. If a limb dies back, ask an arborist to look.
  • If you suspect thousand cankers disease, call your state department of agriculture or extension office. Do not move the wood yourself.

Safety first

Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

For tree crews

Field notes: working on black walnut

  • 1Large trees can have valuable logs. Ask the customer before you cut the stem into firewood lengths.
  • 2Husks and nuts on the ground make footing slick. Clear them from the work zone.
  • 3Sawdust may irritate some people. Wear a dust mask and eye protection.
  • 4Do not move wood from suspected thousand cankers disease trees without checking local quarantine rules.
  • 5Tell the customer that juglone remains in the soil for some time after removal and can affect nearby plants.

Removal notes

Mature trees are large with heavy limbs, and the wood is dense. Sawdust can irritate skin, eyes and lungs for some people. Fallen nuts, husks and leaves can stain hands, concrete and tools and make footing slippery. Walnut lumber can be valuable, so the owner may want straight logs saved. If thousand cankers disease is suspected, do not move the wood without checking local rules.

Black walnut: common questions

Why can't I grow tomatoes near my black walnut?

Black walnut roots, leaves and husks release juglone, which is toxic to some plants, including tomatoes and potatoes. Plant sensitive crops well outside the root zone, or use raised beds far away.

Is black walnut wood valuable?

Straight, large black walnut logs can be worth a good deal as lumber and veneer. Quality, size and local demand matter, so a local sawmill or forester can tell you more.

What is thousand cankers disease?

It is a disease caused by a fungus carried by the walnut twig beetle. It can kill black walnuts. Where it has been found has changed over time. As of 2026, check your state's official map and your state department of agriculture.

Are black walnut nuts safe to eat?

Yes, the kernels are edible and have a strong flavor. The hard shell and the stain-causing husk make them hard to process.

Is black walnut good firewood?

It burns well and has pleasant coals, but it has less heat than oak or hickory. Many people save the wood for lumber instead.

How far do black walnut roots spread?

Roots typically spread at least as far as the crown, and juglone can affect plants within that area and sometimes beyond. Keep sensitive plants well away.
