Cabbage Palm: pruning, storm risk and removal
Sabal palmetto. Also called Sabal palm, Palmetto, Cabbage palmetto.
Plain-English notes for homeowners, plus field notes for tree crews. General guidance only: for one specific tree, have a local insured pro look at it.
Cabbage Palm at a glance
| Height | 40-65 ft |
|---|---|
| Spread | 8-15 ft |
| Growth rate | Slow |
| USDA zones | 8-11 |
| Lifespan | often 100 years or more |
| Type | Palm |
| Native range | Southeastern coast from North Carolina through Florida and along the Gulf coast; it is the state tree of Florida and South Carolina |
| Roots | Fibrous roots that spread out from the base. Palms have no taproot and no woody roots that thicken over time, so they can often be moved when young and handle tight spaces well. |
| Wood | Fibrous trunk with no growth rings and no true wood. It is wet, stringy and hard to cut cleanly or burn. |
| Storm risk | lowCabbage palms are among the most wind-tolerant trees in hurricane country. Failures are rare, though old fronds can fall and lightning is a risk for tall trunks. |
Typical ranges, not guarantees. Soil, water, space and care change how a tree grows. Storm risk is our general rating for the species, not an inspection.
For homeowners
Caring for a cabbage palm
Best time to prune
Remove only dead or fully brown fronds and old flower stalks. Cut them close to the trunk without cutting into the trunk.
Avoid pruning
Avoid hurricane cuts, which strip green fronds to a tight pom-pom. This weakens the palm and does not help in storms. Do not climb with spikes on a palm you want to keep.
More on timing: when to prune trees.
- Keep fertilizer and mulch off the trunk base. Use a palm-specific plan if the soil is poor.
- Remove only brown fronds. Green fronds feed the tree.
- Do not pile soil or paving close to the trunk base.
- A professional with proper tools should trim tall palms. Do not use climbing spikes on trees you keep.
Safety first
Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

For tree crews
Field notes: working on cabbage palm
- 1Clean tools between palms when you can to avoid spreading problems.
- 2Watch for dead fronds and loose boots that can drop on you or the target.
- 3Plan trunk sections by weight. The wet fibrous trunk is heavy.
- 4Palm stumps and fibers dull chains. Plan for extra sharpening.
Removal notes
The trunk is wet and fibrous, so a crew typically cuts it in sections. The stump is a fiber mass, not solid wood, and grinding is slower than on a hardwood. Pricing depends on height, access and whether a crane is needed. Get a written quote.
Wood
Fibrous trunk with no growth rings and no true wood. It is wet, stringy and hard to cut cleanly or burn.

Cabbage Palm: common questions
Is a cabbage palm a real tree?
It is a palm, not a hardwood or softwood. It has no growth rings and no true wood. Many people still call it a tree.
How tall does a cabbage palm get?
Typically 40 to 65 feet over many decades. It grows slowly.
How do I trim a cabbage palm?
Remove only dead, brown fronds and old flower stalks. Do not cut green fronds or strip the crown.
Are cabbage palms good for hurricane areas?
They are among the most wind-tolerant trees on the Southeast coast. They often come through storms better than many hardwoods.
Can a cabbage palm be moved?
Yes, often. Palms have fibrous roots and no taproot, so large ones can be transplanted with the right equipment, though survival depends on care and timing.
What are the downsides of a cabbage palm?
It is slow to grow, can drop heavy fronds and flower stalks, and can attract lightning because of its height. Removal is also slower than for many trees because of the wet, fibrous trunk.
