For homeowners

Caring for a red mulberry

Best time to prune

Late fall or winter while dormant. Prune lightly and shape while the tree is young.

Avoid pruning

Avoid pruning in late winter to spring when sap flows heavily, because the tree bleeds. Avoid big cuts on old trees.

More on timing: when to prune trees.

  • The fruit is edible and loved by birds, but it stains concrete, cars, decks and shoes. Plan placement with that in mind.
  • Do not plant one next to a driveway, patio or pool.
  • Native red mulberry is different from white mulberry, which came from Asia and has spread in many areas. Ask a local pro or your county extension office if you are unsure which you have.
  • Pruning in winter helps limit sap bleeding.

Safety first

Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

Lirevon does not do tree work. Find local pros on Google Maps and read their reviews, then get two or three written quotes.

For tree crews

Field notes: working on red mulberry

  • 1Wear gloves and long sleeves. The milky sap can irritate skin.
  • 2Check for decay in large unions before rigging heavy limbs.
  • 3Cover decks, cars and patios when fruit is on, or schedule outside fruiting season.
  • 4Stump and root sprouts are common, so tell the customer about follow-up options.

Removal notes

Mulberries often grow in fence lines and tight yards, so crews usually work around fences, cars and patios. The fruit stains, so cover surfaces in fruiting season. Latex sap can irritate skin. Wood is not very heavy, but old trees may have hidden decay in large limbs. Sprouts grow from the stump and roots.

Wood

Light to moderate in weight, with a yellow heartwood that holds up fairly well outdoors. Not a top firewood but it burns acceptably when seasoned.

Red Mulberry: common questions

Is mulberry a messy tree?

Yes, the fruit is messy. It drops in late spring to early summer and can stain concrete, vehicles and shoes. Fruitless varieties exist but are usually not the native red mulberry.

Is red mulberry native?

Yes. Red mulberry is native to the eastern US. White mulberry, brought from Asia, is common in many places and can cross with red mulberry.

Why does my mulberry drip sap when I prune it?

Mulberry bleeds when pruned in late winter to spring because the sap is rising. It rarely harms the tree, but it is a good reason to prune in late fall or early winter.

Can I eat the berries?

Ripe mulberries are generally safe to eat and are used in jams and pies. Unripe berries and the sap may upset the stomach.

Do mulberry roots damage foundations or pipes?

Roots are shallow and spread wide. They can lift pavement and may enter old or cracked pipes. Keep the tree well away from structures when planting.

How hard is it to remove a mulberry?

It depends on size, access, fences and nearby structures. Ask for a written quote from two or three insured pros.
