For homeowners
Can I keep the wood after tree removal?
Short answer
Yes, in most cases the wood is yours, and you can ask the crew to cut it into pieces and leave it. Say so before the job. Be careful with wood from sick trees, since some pests and diseases spread through firewood, and local rules may apply.

The longer answer
When a tree comes down, you usually own the wood, and many companies are happy to leave it if you want it. Others will haul it away as part of the quote, and some may offer a lower price if they can keep it. Settle this before the work starts.
If you want to keep it, tell the crew how you want it cut. Firewood length, large slabs, or rounds for seats all need different cuts. Say where to stack it, and keep it away from your house. Wood piled against walls can attract insects.
Fresh wood is wet. Firewood usually needs to dry for a good while before it burns well, and the time depends on the species and the weather. Stack it off the ground with air around it.
Before you keep or move wood, check why the tree came down. Some pests and diseases can spread in firewood. If the tree had one, ask the company or a certified arborist what to do. Local rules may limit moving wood from one area to another, so check your state's official sources.
If you do not want the wood, ask for hauling in the quote. You can also ask neighbors if they want free firewood, but make sure it is safe to use.
