For tree service owners
Does a tree service owner need workers' compensation?
Short answer
It depends on your state, your business structure and whether you have employees. Many states require workers' compensation once you hire employees, and tree work is a high-risk trade. Owners are treated differently from state to state. Ask your insurance agent or state workers' comp office. This is not legal advice.

The longer answer
Workers' compensation pays for medical care and part of lost wages when an employee is hurt on the job. Many states require employers to carry it once they have employees, though the details differ from state to state.
Whether an owner has to cover themselves depends on where you operate and how the business is set up. Some states let owners of certain business types opt out, and others do not. The rules can also change when you hire your first helper. Do not guess. Call your insurance agent or your state's workers' compensation office.
Be careful with the idea that a helper is an independent contractor so you do not need cover. Whether someone counts as an employee is decided by law, not by what you call them. Many states look closely at tree and landscape crews. Talk to a qualified professional before you rely on that setup.
Tree work is dangerous, so injuries are costly. An uninsured injury could end a small company. Many customers, especially commercial ones, also ask for proof of workers' comp before they hire you.
Premiums vary by state and by the kind of work you do, so ask for a written quote. Our workers' comp estimator lets you try your own figures, but it is a rough planning tool.
