For tree service owners
How do I estimate the time for stump grinding?
Short answer
Look at stump width, root flare, soil and rocks, and how close it is to buildings or lines. Add setup, cleanup and moving the machine. Check your own past jobs for how long similar stumps took.

The longer answer
Stump size is only part of the story.
What changes the time: width of the stump, how far roots stretch above ground, how hard the wood is, rocks or metal in the soil, slopes, and tight access like narrow gates.
What else takes time: bringing the machine in, setting up, grinding below grade as agreed, cleaning chips, and filling or leaving the hole. Say in the estimate what you will do with the chips.
How to estimate: use your own records. Note stump width and how long each took, including setup. After a few weeks, you will have your own averages.
Check for hidden hazards before you start: buried lines, pipes and sprinklers. In the US, call 811 before you grind. It is a free national number that marks buried utility lines.
