Service guide for owners
Selling stump grinding: how to describe it, price it and add it to every removal
Stump grinding is a small job with a simple promise: the stump is gone and the yard is usable again. It is easy to sell on its own and even easier as an add-on to a removal. This guide is for owners. It covers how customers search, how to describe grinding so nobody is surprised by the result, how to price by stump from your own costs, and the add-ons that turn a quick grind into a full yard fix.

What customers search for
Customers often do not know the difference between grinding and removing a stump. They search for whatever word they have heard, and they want to know how long it takes and what the yard looks like after. These are examples, not measured search volumes. Your Google Search Console shows the real words.
"stump grinding near me"
The main search. Show up with a clear stump page, your Google Business Profile and real reviews.
"stump removal near me"
Many people say removal when they mean grinding. Explain the difference on your page and offer both if you do both.
"stump grinding cost / price per stump"
People expect a per-stump price. Explain what changes it and offer a fast quote from photos.
"grind stump below ground / so I can plant grass"
They care about the result. Say how deep you grind and what they can plant after.

How to describe stump grinding on your website and Google profile
A good stump grinding description sets clear expectations: how deep you grind, what happens to the chips, whether surface roots are included and what the spot will look like the same day. Most complaints about stump work come from expectations that were never written down.
- Explain grinding in one plain sentence: the machine chews the stump into chips, down below the soil surface.
- Say how deep you usually grind and that deeper grinding is available if they plan to plant or build. Use your real numbers.
- Say what happens to the chips: left in the hole, spread, or hauled away for an extra charge.
- Mention that you call 811 for utility locates before you grind, and that you ask about sprinkler lines.
Example service description
An example to edit. Replace the brackets and keep only what is true for you.
Stump grinding in [Your City] and nearby towns. We grind stumps of any size down below the soil surface, so you can mow, plant grass or replant in the same spot. Send us a photo of your stump and we can often quote by text the same day.
Before we grind, we arrange free utility locates and ask about sprinkler lines and anything buried nearby. Our grinder fits through most backyard gates. We leave the chips in the hole to settle, or haul them away if you prefer.
Need surface roots ground too, or soil and seed after? Just ask. We are fully insured and can send a certificate. Call or text [your number], or book online.
On your Google Business Profile
- Add "Stump grinding" as a service, and "Stump removal" too if you do full removal. Write a short description for each.
- Post before-and-after photos of real stump jobs. The difference is easy to see and makes good posts.
- Ask for a review right after the job. A cleaned-up spot where an ugly stump used to be is a happy moment.

How to structure the price
We do not list market prices for stump grinding; they vary too much by area and job. Build your own price from these parts.
| Part | What to count |
|---|---|
| Grinder time | Hours on the stump, based on diameter and wood. Give the grinder an hourly cost that covers fuel, teeth, wear and payments. |
| Crew time | Operator and helper hours, including setup, moving between stumps and cleanup. Use a loaded hourly cost. |
| Diameter | Measure across the widest part at ground level. Bigger stumps take much more time. |
| Hardness and conditions | Hardwood, rocks, roots near the surface, stumps next to walls or fences. |
| Access | Narrow gates, steps, slopes, soft ground, long carry distances for the machine. |
| Chip cleanup | Leave, spread or haul away. Haul-away adds labor and disposal. |
| Travel and minimum | Drive time and miles for the truck and grinder. A minimum charge covers small single-stump jobs. |
| Overhead and profit | Office, marketing, insurance and the profit you need, added on top. |
The formula, in plain words
Price per stump = (grinder hours x grinder rate + crew hours x loaded crew rate + chip cleanup or haul-away + travel share), adjusted for diameter, hardness, rocks and access, then add your overhead and profit on top. Use a minimum charge for single small stumps. Use your own numbers and correct them after each job.
- Publish a simple way to quote, such as "price by stump, quoted from a photo", rather than a fixed price list that ignores access and hardness.
- Use a minimum job charge so a single small stump still covers the trip.
- On removal quotes, list stump grinding as its own line every time. Many customers add it once they see it.

Photos to take
Stump photos let you price many jobs without a visit. Ask the customer to text a photo of each stump with a tape measure or a shoe next to it for scale. On site, photos of the area before you start protect you if a sprinkler line or a lawn edge becomes a question later.
- Each stump with a tape measure or a common object next to it for scale.
- The area around the stump: walls, fences, beds, sprinkler heads, rocks.
- Access: the gate, steps, slopes and the path the grinder will take.
- Utility locate marks once they are painted, before you start.
- Any existing damage to the lawn, edges or hardscape.
Use the job photo checklist on every job, and ask before posting photos of a customer's home.
Questions to ask on the call
Good questions on the first call save a wasted drive and speed up the quote.
How many stumps, and roughly how wide is each one?
The two numbers that drive most of the price.
Can you text me a photo of each stump with a tape measure?
Lets you quote without a drive on many jobs.
How wide is the gate or path to the stump?
Tells you if your grinder fits and how long setup will take.
Are there sprinkler lines, buried cables or pipes nearby?
Private lines are not marked by 811. The owner may know where they run.
What do you want to do with the spot after?
Grass, a garden or a new tree changes how deep you grind and what you do with chips.
Turn them into a script with the call script builder.
Upsells that make sense
Offer each one as a separate quote line, so the customer can choose.
Surface root grinding
Roots that trip mowers and people. Price by time or by area.
Chip haul-away
Many customers do not want a pile of chips. Offer haul-away as a clear line item.
Soil and seed
Fill the hole with topsoil and seed it, so the spot is ready for grass.
Replacement tree
If you plant trees, suggest a right tree, right place replacement away from the old spot.
Safety and insurance notes
General notes, not training. Grinders throw chips and rocks hard and far, and grinding below the surface can hit buried lines.
Call 811 first
Call 811 for free locates of public utility lines before grinding below the surface, and wait for the marks. Ask the owner about private lines like sprinklers, lighting and gas to outbuildings.
Thrown debris
Grinders throw chips and stones. Use guards or screens, keep people and pets well back, and protect windows, cars and glass doors.
Insurance
Check that your general liability covers damage to underground lines and property near the stump, and carry workers comp as your state requires.
Rules and standards
Federal and state workplace safety rules apply to grinding work. Which rules apply depends on your state and setup. Short explanation, not legal advice.
See the job site safety guide, the insurance guide and the insurance certificate checklist. Not legal advice.

Common questions
What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Grinding chews the stump into chips down below the soil surface and leaves the deeper roots to rot in place. Full stump removal digs or pulls out the stump and main roots, which takes heavier equipment and leaves a bigger hole. Explain both on your site, because customers mix the words up.
How should I price stump grinding?
Most companies price per stump, based on diameter, with changes for hardness, rocks, access and cleanup. Build your rate from grinder cost per hour, crew cost and travel, then add overhead and profit. The stump grinding estimator does the math with your own numbers.
Can I quote stump grinding from photos?
Often, yes. Ask for a photo of each stump with a tape measure for scale, plus a photo of the access path. Say on the quote that the price assumes what the photos show, and that rocks or hidden roots may change it.
How deep should I grind?
It depends on what the customer will do with the spot and on your machine. Grass needs less depth than replanting a tree in the same place. Agree on the depth and write it on the quote.
Do I need to call 811 before grinding a stump?
Calling 811 for utility locates before you grind below ground is the safe and widely expected practice, and it is free. Rules on when it is required vary by state. Short explanation, not legal advice.
Should I buy a stump grinder or rent one?
Count how many stump hours you sell in a year, including the ones you turned down. Compare the yearly cost of owning with renting for the same hours. The equipment buy vs rent tool helps you compare.
What should my stump grinding page say?
What grinding is, how deep you go, what happens to chips, that you call 811 first, whether your grinder fits backyard gates, the towns you serve, real photos, reviews and how to get a quote from a photo.
