For homeowners

What should I do if a tree company says it has no insurance?

Short answer

Think hard before hiring it. If a worker or your property is hurt, you could be left with the bill. Ask other companies for quotes and pick one that can send a current certificate of insurance. You can also ask your own insurance agent how your policy treats this.

The longer answer

A company with no insurance may quote a lower price. That lower price often exists because the risk has moved to you.

If damage happens, a company with no cover may not be able to pay, and you may need to turn to your own homeowners policy. If a worker is hurt, you may be pulled into a claim. Policies and state laws differ.

The safer path is simple. Get two or three written quotes, and ask each company for a certificate of insurance. Call the insurer on the certificate to confirm the policy is active. If a company will not send one, you can walk away. Rules differ by state; see /tree-service-license for your state's official sources. This is a short explanation, not legal advice. Check with your state, county and city, and ask your own insurance agent or an attorney about your case.

Safety first: stay away from downed power lines and call the utility; call 911 if anyone is in danger. Lirevon does not do tree work. Find local pros on Google Maps and read their reviews, then get two or three written quotes.
