For homeowners

What should I do if a tree crew arrives with no insurance papers?

Short answer

Ask the crew to wait before any cutting starts until you see proof of current insurance that matches the company you hired. If it never arrives, reschedule or cancel in writing. This is general information, not legal advice.

The longer answer

A crew without paperwork is not always a scam. The office may have forgotten to send it. But the right step is still the same: hold the work until you have proof.

Tell the crew lead politely that you need the certificate of insurance before any cutting. Ask them to call the office. Stay in a safe spot away from the work area. If the office cannot send it, send a text or email saying the job is on hold until you receive proof.

Check two things when it comes. The company name should match your agreement, and the dates should cover that day. Then call the insurer or agent named on the certificate to confirm the policy is active.

A crew that pushes back hard or says "we will send it later" is a warning sign. Be careful about signing any paper that releases the company from damage caused by its own work. Save all messages.

If you already paid a deposit and cancel, ask for it back in writing. A local consumer protection office can help if there is a dispute.
