What is Chainsaw chaps?
Short answer
Chainsaw chaps are cut-resistant leg guards that clog a saw chain if it touches the leg, giving time to stop.
Chainsaw chaps, explained for tree service owners
Chainsaw chaps are protective leg covers made of layers of fabric that tangle in a saw chain if it touches them. The fibers pull out and jam the chain, which stops it quickly and can prevent a serious cut. Chaps are worn over pants whenever someone is using a chainsaw on the ground. Climbers use special trousers with the same layers. Chaps do not make someone safe by themselves: crews also use helmets, eye and ear protection, gloves and boots. They wear out and must be replaced after a cut. A tree service owner can list safety gear on the website and in bids, since some commercial customers ask about it.
