What is Minimum approach distance?

Short answer

Minimum approach distance is the closest a worker or tool may get to an energized power line, set by safety rules.

Minimum approach distance, explained for tree service owners

Power lines are one of the most dangerous hazards in tree work. The safe distance depends on voltage, and only trained, qualified line-clearance workers may work close to energized lines. Everyone else should stay well back, and homeowners should never prune near lines. If a tree touches a line, call the utility, and call 911 if anyone is hurt or in danger. Owners should not guess the voltage of a line. Training and rules are set by safety standards and law. This is a short explanation, not legal advice. Ask a qualified safety trainer for the exact distances.
