What is mobile-first indexing?

Short answer

Mobile-first indexing means Google mainly uses the phone version of your website to decide how to list and rank it.

mobile-first indexing, explained for tree service owners

Google looks at the mobile version of your pages first. If your phone version hides content, has tiny text, or lacks the same details as the desktop version, your listing can suffer. Most tree service customers already search on phones, so this matches real life. Check your site on an actual phone: can you read it without zooming, tap the call button, and fill in the form easily? Make sure the phone version has the same text, service list and structured data as the desktop one. A responsive design that adapts to any screen solves most of this. A simple, clean layout usually works best.
