What is meta description?

Short answer

A meta description is the short summary under a page title in search results, written to help people decide to click.

meta description, explained for tree service owners

The meta description is a line or two in the page code that often appears under your headline in Google. It is not a direct ranking factor, but a clear one can bring more clicks. Aim for roughly 140 to 155 characters so it is not cut off. Say what the page offers, who it is for and what to do next. For example: tree removal in your town, written estimates, call today. Use only claims that are true for your business. Google sometimes rewrites it to match the search, which is normal. Give each page its own description instead of copying one.
