What is Tag line?

Short answer

A tag line is a rope tied to a piece being lowered or lifted so a worker on the ground can steer it away from people and property.

Tag line, explained for tree service owners

A tag line is a light rope attached to a limb, log or crane load so a ground worker can guide it. Think of it as a steering rope. When a heavy piece is lowered over a driveway or roof, the worker pulls the tag line to swing the piece away from the house or toward a safe landing spot. On crane jobs the tag line also keeps the load from spinning, so no one has to put hands on a hanging load. Using tag lines is a simple habit that cuts down on damage and injuries. Crews should keep their feet clear and never wrap the line around a hand.
