What is Workers' compensation?

Short answer

Workers' compensation is insurance that pays medical bills and part of lost wages when an employee is hurt on the job.

Workers' compensation, explained for tree service owners

Workers' comp is one of the biggest insurance costs for a tree company, because tree work is dangerous. If a groundsman is hurt by a falling limb, this policy pays for treatment and some lost pay. In many cases it is the worker's main remedy, which can limit lawsuits against the owner. Rules differ by state, and many states require it once you have employees. The price is based on payroll and job class, so tree climbing costs more than office work. Keep payroll records honest, because audits happen. This is a short explanation, not legal advice. Ask an insurance agent for a quote.
