Stump grinding vs stump removal: which one fits your yard?

Both get rid of a stump, but they leave very different things behind. Here is the plain difference, a side-by-side table and the questions to ask before you say yes.

By Umair Nawaz, founder of Lirevon Updated How we check facts

Lirevon is not a tree company.

The short answer

Grinding chews the stump into chips below the soil and leaves the roots to rot. Removal digs out the stump and the big roots, so it leaves a larger hole but clears the spot more fully. Grinding is the usual choice for a lawn. Removal is the usual choice before you build, pave or plant in the same spot.

The two choices

Stump grinding

A machine with a spinning, toothed wheel grinds the stump down to a set depth below the soil. The main roots stay in the ground and break down slowly. You get a pile of chips and soil, and the yard stays mostly flat.

Stump removal

The crew digs out the stump and the large roots close to it, often with a machine. It leaves a bigger hole to fill with soil and disturbs more of the yard, but there is much less wood left in the ground.

Side-by-side table

A quick comparison. Your tree and yard may differ, so ask a pro who has looked at the job.

Roots Stay in the ground and rot over time The main roots near the stump come out
Yard disturbance Small to moderate Larger: a real hole to fill
What is left A pile of chips and soil A hole, plus a stump and roots to haul away
Replant in the same spot Possible, but ask about depth and clearing the chips Usually easier
Build or pave there Ask a pro; roots will decay and the soil may settle Usually the better fit
Watch out for Buried pipes and wires, rocks, flying debris Utility lines, foundations, soil settling

When to choose each

Choose Grinding when

  • You want grass over the spot and a flat lawn.
  • You want the least mess and the least digging.
  • The stump is close to a fence, patio or house and a big hole would be a risk.
  • You are fine with chips used as mulch or hauled away.

Choose Removal when

  • You plan a patio, shed, driveway or footing on the spot.
  • You want to plant a new tree in the same place.
  • The tree had a root disease and you want less wood left in the soil. Ask a pro first.
  • The stump keeps sending up shoots and you want the roots out.

Not sure which one you need? Ask two or three local pros what they would do and why. For all the stump choices, including leaving it in place, read stump removal options.

Questions to ask

Ask every company the same questions, so you can compare quotes for the same work.

Is the stump included in the tree removal quote?

Many removal quotes leave it out. Get it written down either way.

Do you grind, dig it out, or both?

Make sure you know which method you are paying for.

How deep will you grind, and how far out do the surface roots go?

Depth matters for new grass or a new tree. Surface roots are a common surprise.

What happens to the chips and the hole?

Left, raked, hauled or filled with soil: each is a different job.

Who calls 811 before any digging?

In the US, 811 is the free call-before-you-dig number. Ask who makes the call.

How will you protect my house, windows, fence and lawn?

Ask about screens for flying debris and mats for the lawn.

Are you insured, and can I see the certificate?

Ask for liability and workers compensation, and check both are current.

Common questions

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Grinding chews the stump into chips below the ground and leaves the roots to rot. Removal digs out the stump and the large nearby roots and leaves a bigger hole to fill. Ask any company which one it means.

Which is cheaper, grinding or removal?

We do not list prices for tree work. Stump size, how many stumps, access, roots and cleanup all change the price. Get two or three written quotes for the same scope and compare them.

Do the roots die after stump grinding?

The roots left in the ground stop feeding a tree and slowly rot over the years. Some kinds of trees send up sprouts from roots or the stump for a while, so a few shoots can appear.

Can I plant a new tree after grinding?

Often, yes, but it is easier with a deeper grind, the chips cleared and fresh soil added. Many people plant a little to one side. Ask your pro how deep they will grind.

Can I build a patio or shed over a ground stump?

Ask a pro before you do. Roots keep rotting for years, and the soil can settle as they break down. Full removal is often the safer choice under anything that must stay level.

Do I need to call 811 before stump work?

In the US, 811 is the free call-before-you-dig number, and grinding or digging near buried lines is risky. Ask the company who will make the call. Short explanation, not legal advice.

Can I rent a grinder and do it myself?

We suggest a trained, insured pro. Grinders throw debris, can hit buried lines and are hard to control. Never use a chainsaw on storm-damaged wood or cut near power lines.

Does Lirevon grind or remove stumps?

No. Lirevon does not do tree work and does not list or rank tree companies. We help tree service owners run their business. This guide is general information for homeowners.

Is grinding enough if I just want grass?

Usually, yes. Grinding below the soil line, clearing the chips and adding topsoil and seed lets grass grow over the spot. Ask the pro how deep they will grind.

What happens to the wood chips after grinding?

Ask before the job. Chips can be left in the hole, raked into a pile for mulch, or hauled away, and each choice is a different job in the quote.
