Answer rate test
By Umair Nawaz, founder of Lirevon Updated How we test tools
For one week, log every call to your business line: when it came in, if someone picked up, if the caller left a voicemail and what happened. The tool shows your answer rate by day and by hour, your voicemail rate and an estimate of the jobs those missed calls cost.

Estimate only. Estimated lost jobs = missed calls that were not spam or existing customers and left no voicemail × your close rate. Estimated lost revenue = lost jobs × job value. Some of those callers would not have booked, and some call back.
How to test your own line after hours
The log shows real calls. This quick test shows what a new customer hears. Do it yourself, honestly, and write down what happens.
- Borrow a phone your crew will not recognize, such as a friend's or family member's.
- Call your business line three times in one week: once on a weekday around 6:30 pm, once on Saturday afternoon, and once while your crew is out on a job.
- Count the rings before someone answers or voicemail starts. Note if the mailbox is full or has no greeting.
- Hang up without leaving a message, like most callers do.
- Wait. Did anyone call or text the number back? Write down how long it took, or "never".
- Visit your own website on that phone. Is there a tap-to-call button, a way to text you and a way to book online?
- Add the three test calls to the log above with the outcome "Unknown", so you see them next to real calls.
We run the same kind of check in our free audit and send you the result. You can also run the 30-second check on your website now.
Questions owners ask
What is a good answer rate for a tree company?
There is no single right number, but every missed real call is a customer who may call the next company. Invoca reports that about 27% of calls to home-service businesses go unanswered. Measure your own first, then aim higher.
Why log a whole week?
Calls are missed at certain times: on a job, at lunch, after 5 pm and on Saturday. One week shows the pattern by day and hour, so you know which hours to cover.
Where do I find my calls?
Your phone's recent calls list shows answered and missed calls. Many carriers and business phone apps also show a call log online. Add each call to the table here, including spam, then mark the outcome.
Why does voicemail rate matter?
Invoca reports that under 3% of callers to home-service businesses who go unanswered leave a voicemail. A missed call with no voicemail is often a lost job unless you call or text back fast.
How is "estimated lost jobs" worked out?
Missed calls that were not spam or existing customers and left no voicemail, times your close rate. Times your job value gives estimated lost revenue. It is an estimate: some of those callers would never have booked, and some will call back.
Should I count spam calls?
Log them so the total is honest, and mark the outcome as spam or wrong number. The lost-jobs estimate leaves them out.
Is my call log sent anywhere?
No. The log is saved in your browser on this device only. If you clear your browser data, it is gone. Use the print button to keep a copy.
What if my answer rate is low?
Start with the hours you miss most. Options include a person on the phone in those hours, an answering service, or a missed-call text-back and AI receptionist like the system we install. Compare the cost of each with the lost jobs you estimated.
How do I work out my answer rate by hand?
Divide the calls you answered by all the calls that came in, then multiply by 100. For example, 8 answered calls out of 10 is an 80% answer rate. The tool does this for you and splits it by day and hour.
How long should I run the answer rate test?
One full week is the minimum, and it should include a Saturday and some evenings. Two weeks gives a steadier picture, especially if your work changes with the weather.
