Tree service in Raleigh, NC: how to choose, local facts and permits

By Umair Nawaz, founder of Lirevon Updated How we check facts

Local facts

Raleigh tree companies by the numbers

From our own October 2026 check of Google Maps listings for "tree service" and "tree removal". Totals only: we do not name or rank these companies.

  • 34

tree service companies we found in the Raleigh area

  • 9%

of those listings had no website

  • 105

Google reviews on the median listing

  • 384–703

reviews on the three most-reviewed listings

What this means when you hire

  • A company with no website is common here. Judge it by insurance, a clear written quote and recent reviews.
  • About half the listings had fewer than 105 reviews. A low count can just mean a newer company; read what customers say.
  • A big review count is a good sign, not a promise. Still get two or three written quotes.

Trees and pests

Common trees in North Carolina

Pests and problems to ask about

State-level lists as of 2026, not a survey of Raleigh; check your state's official pest map. Ask a certified arborist or your county extension office what is active near you. More in tree care in North Carolina.

Storm season

Storms in North Carolina

Hurricane season runs from June to November, and the coast is hit hardest. Summer thunderstorms are common statewide, and ice storms can load up limbs in the Piedmont in winter.

After a storm: stay clear of leaning or split trees, call the utility for downed lines and 911 if anyone is in danger. Read what to do after a storm or see live storm warnings.

Permits

Tree permits in Raleigh

A permit is needed for some trees or some sites.

Raleigh needs a Tree Impact Permit for any work on city trees, which include street trees in the right-of-way and trees on city-owned land. On private sites of 2 acres or more without a recorded tree conservation area, the city's development code limits tree removal in perimeter buffers and requires a city permit. Recorded tree conservation areas also need a tree conservation permit before trees are disturbed.

Hiring checklist

Before you hire in Raleigh

  1. 1Get two or three written quotes that list cleanup, wood and stump work, and the start date.
  2. 2Ask for a certificate of liability insurance and workers’ compensation, sent by the insurer, and check the dates.
  3. 3Ask who gets any Raleigh tree permit and who pays the fee. Put it in the written quote.
  4. 4Ask whether a certified arborist will look at the tree, especially for pruning, disease or a tree near the house.
  5. 5Read recent Google reviews and look at how the owner replies, not just the star rating.
  6. 6Do not pay the whole job up front. A fair deposit is normal for big jobs; full payment comes when the work is done.
  7. 7Be careful with anyone who knocks after a storm and pushes you to sign today.
  8. 8Never climb, cut near power lines or touch a downed line. Call the utility for lines and 911 if anyone is in danger.
  9. 9Read the North Carolina rules on our state license page, since pesticide work needs a license.

Tree service in Raleigh: questions

How do I choose a tree service in Raleigh, NC?

Get two or three written quotes from insured local companies, ask for proof of insurance sent by the insurer, read recent Google reviews and ask who handles any city permit. In our October 2026 check we found 34 tree companies listed on Google Maps in the Raleigh area, so you have choices.

How many tree service companies are there in Raleigh?

Our October 2026 check of Google Maps found 34 tree service companies in the Raleigh, NC area after removing duplicates, franchises and unrelated businesses. The real number may be higher, because some crews are not on Google Maps.

Is it a red flag if a Raleigh tree company has no website?

Not on its own. 9% of the Raleigh listings we checked had no website. Look instead at insurance, a written quote, recent reviews and how clearly they answer your questions.

How many Google reviews should a good tree company have?

There is no magic number. The median Raleigh listing we checked had 105 reviews and the three most-reviewed had between 384 and 703 reviews. A newer company can be good with few reviews; read what customers say and how the owner replies.

Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Raleigh?

Raleigh needs a Tree Impact Permit for any work on city trees, which include street trees in the right-of-way and trees on city-owned land. On private sites of 2 acres or more without a recorded tree conservation area, the city's development code limits tree removal in perimeter buffers and requires a city permit. Recorded tree conservation areas also need a tree conservation permit before trees are disturbed. See our Raleigh tree permit page for sources. Short explanation, not legal advice.

When is storm season in Raleigh?

Hurricane season runs from June to November, and the coast is hit hardest. Summer thunderstorms are common statewide, and ice storms can load up limbs in the Piedmont in winter. Have large trees near the house checked before the season starts.

When is the best time to prune trees in Raleigh?

Late winter is a good time to prune most trees, and crape myrtles are usually pruned lightly then. Storm-damaged or dead limbs should be handled as soon as it is safe. Ask a certified arborist about your tree.

How much does tree removal cost?

It depends on the tree size, how close it is to the house or lines, access for equipment, cleanup and stump work. We do not publish prices for tree work. Get two or three written quotes so you can compare.

Why are only some Raleigh companies named on this page?

We only name a company when its owner claims a free profile and agrees to show it. We do not rank companies, there is no pay-to-rank, and claimed profiles are shown in alphabetical order. To see every local company, search Google Maps and read their reviews.
