For homeowners

Caring for a flowering dogwood

Best time to prune

Right after flowering, or in late winter or early spring. Remove dead, diseased and crossing branches. Use clean tools.

Avoid pruning

Avoid heavy pruning, especially in wet spring or summer weather. Avoid wounding the trunk with mowers and trimmers.

More on timing: when to prune trees.

  • Dogwoods like part shade, rich, moist but well-drained soil and a layer of mulch (keep it off the trunk).
  • Dogwood anthracnose is a serious disease in the eastern US. Look for spots on leaves, dying twigs and trunk cankers. Ask your extension office about treatment.
  • Protect the trunk from mower and trimmer damage, which opens the way for disease.
  • Water during dry spells, especially in the first years after planting.

Safety first

Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

For tree crews

Field notes: working on flowering dogwood

  • 1Disinfect tools between trees if you see anthracnose or cankers.
  • 2Avoid wounding bark. Dogwoods have thin bark that is easily hurt.
  • 3Mulch away from the trunk and do not pile it against the bark.
  • 4Expect brittle limbs on stressed or dying trees.

Removal notes

Dogwoods are usually small, so removal is simple. Dead or sick trees can have brittle limbs. Avoid damage to nearby trees and plants. A stump may sprout.

Wood

Very hard, dense and fine-grained. Historically used for small tools. Not common for firewood because trees are small.
