For homeowners

Caring for a eastern redbud

Best time to prune

Right after flowering, or in summer. Remove dead wood and crossing branches, and fix weak forks while the tree is young.

Avoid pruning

Avoid heavy pruning in wet spring weather, which spreads canker. Avoid removing large limbs on mature trees.

More on timing: when to prune trees.

  • Redbud flowers in early spring before the leaves come out.
  • It is relatively short lived, and many trees decline after 20 or so years from canker and other problems.
  • Water during dry spells and mulch well, keeping mulch off the trunk.
  • Pick a healthy nursery tree. Redbuds do not transplant well when large.

Safety first

Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

Lirevon does not do tree work. Find local pros on Google Maps and read their reviews, then get two or three written quotes.

For tree crews

Field notes: working on eastern redbud

  • 1Look for cankers and dead twigs. Sudden dieback in a branch may point to canker or verticillium.
  • 2Clean tools between trees if you see disease.
  • 3Redbud forks often split. Check for included bark.
  • 4Seedlings often pop up beneath mature trees.

Removal notes

Redbuds are small, so removal is usually simple. Dead or declining trees can have brittle limbs. Many trees reseed, so you may see seedlings nearby. Stumps can sprout.

Wood

Hard and dense, but trees are small. Used as small firewood.

Eastern Redbud: common questions

How long do redbuds live?

Typically 20 to 30 years. Some live longer, but many decline from canker, drought or poor sites.

Why are branches on my redbud dying?

Common causes include canker, verticillium wilt, drought stress and root problems. An ISA certified arborist can help you find the cause.

When should I prune a redbud?

Typically right after it flowers. Remove dead and crossing branches. Avoid heavy pruning.

Is redbud native?

Yes. Eastern redbud is native across much of the eastern and central US.

Can I move a redbud?

Young trees can be moved. Large trees often do poorly because of their root system. Move small ones in early spring or fall.

How big does eastern redbud get?

Typically 20 to 30 feet tall and wide, with a rounded, spreading shape.
