Sassafras: pruning, storm risk and removal

Sassafras albidum. Also called white sassafras, mitten tree, ague tree.

Height 30-60 ft Zones 4-9 Growth medium Storm risk: medium

Plain-English notes for homeowners, plus field notes for tree crews. General guidance only: for one specific tree, have a local insured pro look at it.

Sassafras at a glance

Quick facts about sassafras
Height 30-60 ft
Spread 25-40 ft
Growth rate Medium
USDA zones 4-9
Lifespan Typically 50-100 years, sometimes more
Type Deciduous
Native range Eastern United States, from Maine and Michigan south to Florida and east Texas.
Roots Shallow and wide-spreading, with a deep taproot when young. The tree sends up root suckers that form colonies. It is hard to transplant once it is established.
Wood Light, soft, coarse-grained and aromatic. It is fairly durable in contact with soil, so it has been used for fence posts. It is not a high-quality firewood.
Storm risk mediumThe wood is fairly soft and brittle, so limbs can break in ice or wind. Trees in groups from root suckers are usually smaller and more even.

Typical ranges, not guarantees. Soil, water, space and care change how a tree grows. Storm risk is our general rating for the species, not an inspection.

Caring for a sassafras

Best time to prune

Prune in late winter while the tree is dormant. Remove dead limbs, thin crowded branches and cut off root suckers you do not want.

Avoid pruning

Avoid heavy pruning in summer heat. Do not top the tree. Avoid big cuts on large limbs, which heal slowly.

More on timing: when to prune trees.

  • Sassafras has three leaf shapes on the same tree: an oval, a mitten and a three-lobed leaf. That makes it easy to spot.
  • Fall color is often bright yellow, orange and red. It is a good fall-color tree.
  • If you do not want a thicket, cut or mow root suckers early.
  • Sudden wilting and dark streaks under the bark can point to laurel wilt. Contact your state forest or agriculture office and an arborist.

Safety first

Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

For tree crews

Field notes: working on sassafras

  • 1Wood is brittle. Test limbs before loading them.
  • 2Plan on suckers coming back. Grind stumps and tell the customer about follow-up.
  • 3Look for laurel wilt signs on dead trees in the Southeast: sudden wilt with leaves that stay on the tree.
  • 4The bark and leaves have a spicy smell when cut, which is normal for the species.

Removal notes

Sassafras is usually small to medium, so removal is often straightforward. Root suckers keep coming up after the main tree is gone, so grinding the stump and mowing or cutting suckers helps. A tree killed by laurel wilt may be brittle and need care when climbing. Get a written quote.

Sassafras: common questions

Why does my sassafras have different leaf shapes?

It naturally grows three shapes of leaf on the same tree: oval, mitten-shaped with one thumb and three-lobed. This is normal.

Why are there so many baby sassafras trees around my tree?

Sassafras spreads by root suckers, so one tree can turn into a thicket over time. Cutting or mowing the shoots early keeps it in check.

What is laurel wilt?

It is a fungus carried by an invasive ambrosia beetle. It can kill redbay and sassafras. Leaves turn brown but stay on the tree. Check your state's official map and report it.

Can I move a sassafras?

It is hard. Young trees have a deep taproot and the roots are sensitive. Small suckers can sometimes be moved, but success is not guaranteed. A nursery plant is safer.

Is sassafras good firewood?

It is a light wood that burns fast and makes less heat than hardwoods like oak. It is fine for kindling or shoulder-season fires.

Is it safe to use sassafras root for tea?

Sassafras root oil contains safrole, a compound that US food rules do not allow as an additive. This is a short note, not medical advice. Ask a health professional before using any plant as a remedy.
