Sweet Birch at a glance

Quick facts about sweet birch
Height 40-60 ft
Spread 30-45 ft
Growth rate Slow to medium
USDA zones 3-7
Lifespan Typically 60-100 years
Type Deciduous
Native range Eastern United States, mostly in the Appalachian Mountains and New England, from Maine south to Georgia and Alabama
Roots Fairly shallow and spreading. The tree likes moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil and does poorly in heavy, wet or compacted ground.
Wood Hard, heavy and fine-grained. It burns well as firewood once dried and has been used for furniture. Twigs and bark have a wintergreen scent.
Storm risk mediumThe wood is strong and dense, but older trees often have heart rot in the trunk or limbs. Ice and wet snow can break branches, and stressed trees drop dead limbs.

Typical ranges, not guarantees. Soil, water, space and care change how a tree grows. Storm risk is our general rating for the species, not an inspection.

For homeowners

Caring for a sweet birch

Best time to prune

Mid to late summer or early fall. Birches bleed sap heavily when pruned in late winter or spring. Remove dead and crossing branches and keep one strong leader on young trees.

Avoid pruning

Avoid pruning in late winter and spring when sap is rising. Do not top the tree. Avoid large wounds, since decay can follow.

More on timing: when to prune trees.

  • Plant it in moist, well-drained soil. It does not like hot, dry, compacted or paved sites.
  • Water deeply during dry spells and mulch a few inches away from the trunk.
  • Watch for thinning in the top of the crown. It can be a warning of stress or borers.
  • Scratch a twig and smell it. A strong wintergreen scent points to sweet birch.

Safety first

Do not climb a tree or use a chainsaw on storm-loaded or broken wood. If a tree or limb is touching power lines, stay away and call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911. For anything big, hire a local insured pro: read how to hire a tree service and is my tree dangerous?

For tree crews

Field notes: working on sweet birch

  • 1Do not mistake it for black cherry. Look for the birch-type catkins, the doubly toothed leaves and the wintergreen smell.
  • 2Check for D-shaped exit holes and thin tops, which can point to bronze birch borer in a stressed tree.
  • 3Inspect forks and old wounds for decay before you load a limb.
  • 4Plan for heavy, dense wood on larger sections.

Removal notes

Mature trees are often found on slopes and rocky ground, so plan truck access and rigging. Wood is heavy and dense. Check for decay behind wounds and at forks. Smooth, dark bark with horizontal marks, like a cherry tree, is normal.

Wood

Sweet Birch: common questions

Why is sweet birch called black birch?

Young trees have smooth, dark, reddish-brown bark. It looks a lot like cherry bark, which is why the tree is also called cherry birch.

How can I tell sweet birch from black cherry?

Scratch a twig. Sweet birch smells strongly of wintergreen. Sweet birch also has doubly toothed leaves and small cone-like catkins, while black cherry has finely toothed leaves and berries.

Does sweet birch get bronze birch borer?

It can, but it is more resistant than white-barked birches. Drought and root stress make attack more likely.

Is sweet birch good firewood?

Yes. The wood is dense and burns long and hot once dried, typically for at least 6 to 12 months.

Why does my birch drip sap after pruning?

Birches bleed in late winter and spring. It looks alarming but is usually not harmful. Pruning in summer or early fall avoids most of it.

When should a sweet birch be removed?

Usually when it is dead, badly decayed, or leaning over a house or wires. A certified arborist can inspect it and give written advice. Get two or three written quotes.
