For homeowners
How do I prune a tree branch that is too high to reach?
Short answer
Hire an insured tree service. Do not climb the tree, stand on a ladder with a saw, or reach near power lines. Falls and wire contact are among the most serious tree-work injuries.

The longer answer
High branches need climbing gear, ropes and training. A pole pruner can handle only small, light branches from the ground, and only when no wires are nearby. Anything thick or heavy enough to drop hard is a pro job.
A pole saw or pole pruner with a metal or wet pole can conduct electricity. Stay well away from power lines. If a branch is touching a line, do not touch the branch or the tree. Call the utility. If someone is in danger, call 911.
A crew can lower big limbs with ropes, which protects your roof, fence and plants. Ask for proof of insurance first and get the price in writing.
