For tree service owners
Should a tree service charge for estimates?
Short answer
Many residential tree companies give free estimates, because homeowners expect to compare two or three quotes. Some charge a fee for complex jobs or written reports, or credit the fee if the customer books. Whatever you choose, say it clearly on the first call and in your messages.

The longer answer
Free estimates are common for typical home jobs. Homeowners usually call several companies, and a fee can send them to the next one. Since your visit is a sales step, many owners treat it as a cost of doing business.
That cost is real, though. Driving, looking at the tree and writing a quote takes time. If your close rate is low, you may spend much of your week on estimates that never become jobs. Track how many estimates you give and how many you win. If the numbers are poor, tighten how you qualify leads before the visit.
Some companies charge for specialty work, such as a written tree risk assessment or a report for an insurance claim or a permit. That is a different service from a quote, and many owners price it separately. Say clearly what the customer gets for the fee.
A middle path: ask a few questions by phone or text first, ask for photos, and give a rough range when you can. Then visit only the jobs that look like a fit. Always tell the customer a rough range is not a final quote.
Whatever your rule, be consistent. Put it in your first text and on your website so nobody is surprised.
A fast reply and a clear next step matter more than the fee.
