For tree service owners

How much does it cost to start a tree service?

Short answer

It depends on your state, your equipment and whether you buy used or new, so the honest answer is to build your own budget. The big items are a truck, a chipper, saws, climbing and safety gear, insurance and some cash in reserve.

The longer answer

There is no single number that fits every owner. Costs change a lot by region, by the age and condition of the equipment, and by the kind of work you plan to do.

List every cost in groups. Equipment: a truck, a chipper, chainsaws, climbing and rigging gear, and protective equipment. Insurance: general liability, commercial auto and, once you hire, workers' compensation. Business costs: licenses and permits where your state or city requires them, a website, a Google Business Profile (which is free to set up) and a phone number you can answer.

Then add working cash. Tree work has slow weeks, and fuel, repairs and payroll still come due. Keep a cash reserve that covers the slow weeks and bills, so you are not forced to take bad jobs.

You can lower the starting bill by buying used gear, renting a stump grinder or lift for bigger jobs, and starting small. Get written quotes for insurance before you buy anything, because premiums can surprise new owners.
