For tree service owners
Is a business license the same thing as a tree service license?
Short answer
No. A general business license lets you operate in a city or county. A trade or contractor license, where a state has one, shows you may do a specific kind of work. Many states have no tree-specific license, but you may still need a local business license.

The longer answer
These are often mixed up. A general business license or registration is about the business itself. Cities, counties and states may ask for one, and some also ask for a tax registration.
A trade or contractor license is about the type of work. Some states license tree care, pesticide use, or contractors in general, and some do not. The rules are different in each state, which is why our state pages list what we could confirm and link to the official source.
The safe habit is to check at three levels: state, county and city. Write down what each office told you and the date. Keep copies of what you filed. Rules differ by state; see /tree-service-license for your state's official sources. This is a short explanation, not legal advice. Check with your state, county and city, and ask your own insurance agent or an attorney about your case.
