What is anchor text?

Short answer

Anchor text is the clickable words in a link, and it gives search engines a hint about what the linked page is about.

anchor text, explained for tree service owners

Look at a link on a web page: the words you click are the anchor text. Clear anchor text such as stump grinding services tells people and search engines what to expect. Vague text like click here tells them nothing. On your own website, use short, natural phrases when you link between pages, for example linking the words tree removal pricing to your pricing page. Do not repeat the exact same phrase everywhere, because it looks forced. When other sites link to you, you cannot control the words, and that is fine. Write for people first and the links will help search engines as a bonus.
