What is canonical URL?

Short answer

A canonical URL is the main web address you tell search engines to treat as the official version of a page.

canonical URL, explained for tree service owners

Sometimes the same page can be reached by more than one address, for example with and without www, or with tracking codes added at the end. Search engines may see these as duplicates and split the credit between them. A canonical tag in the page code says: this is the main version, use this one. For a tree service site, it keeps your service pages tidy, so one page earns the full strength instead of three weak copies. Most site builders set it up automatically, but it is worth a quick check. It is also useful when you publish the same content in two places.
