What is Directional felling?

Short answer

Directional felling is cutting down a tree so it lands in a chosen spot, using notch, hinge, wedges and sometimes ropes.

Directional felling, explained for tree service owners

Directional felling means dropping a tree in a planned direction instead of letting it fall on its own. The crew looks at the lean, the branches, the wind, the ground and the targets, then picks a landing zone. They make a notch aimed at it, leave an even hinge, and use wedges or a pull rope when needed. This works when there is open room to drop a whole tree. When a tree is close to a house or wires, crews switch to climbing and rigging, or to a crane. For a tree service owner, knowing which method fits is a pricing question as well as a safety one, since sectional removals usually take longer than a straight felling.
