What is Umbrella insurance?
Short answer
Umbrella insurance is extra liability coverage that adds more limit on top of your main policies.
Umbrella insurance, explained for tree service owners
If a big claim is larger than your general liability limit, an umbrella policy pays the extra amount, up to its own limit. Crane work, large removals near buildings and commercial contracts can push owners to buy one. Some customers or contracts ask for a higher total limit, and an umbrella may be a lower-cost way to reach it. It sits above your other policies, so those underlying policies must meet the rules of the umbrella. This is a short explanation, not insurance advice. Ask your agent which limit fits your work.
