Pricing and estimating tree work
A good price starts with your own costs, not a number from another company. Your crew, equipment, insurance, fuel, disposal and overhead set the floor. Profit goes on top.
The guides here show how to build a price, walk a site, spot risks and write an estimate the homeowner understands. They also cover crane jobs and storm work, where the risk and cost change fast.
The calculators use your numbers. Every result is an estimate and a starting point, so change the inputs to fit your business.

Questions about pricing and estimating
How do I set prices for tree work?
Start with your costs. Add up a year of crew wages and payroll taxes, equipment, insurance, fuel, disposal and overhead, then divide by the days you expect to work. That gives a cost per crew day. Estimate how long each job will take, apply that rate, add job-specific costs and then add your profit.
Should I just charge what other tree companies charge?
Other companies' prices can tell you about your market, but they do not know your costs. If your costs are higher and you copy a low price, you lose money on every job. Know your own floor first, then decide how to position yourself. Our profit margin calculator helps you check.
Why do two similar trees get very different prices?
Because the site changes the work. A tree over a house or near power lines, poor access for equipment, dead or weak wood, or a long drag to the chipper all add time and risk. The tree's size is only one part. Write down what drives the price so the homeowner understands it.
Should I charge for estimates?
Many tree companies give free estimates for normal jobs, because homeowners expect it. Some charge for detailed reports, arborist assessments or estimates far outside their area, and credit the fee if the job is booked. Choose a policy that fits your time and say it clearly up front.
How do I price crane jobs?
Add the crane cost, whether you own or rent, the operator, setup time, permits if needed and the extra crew time and risk. Crane jobs can be faster and safer on the right tree, but the fixed costs are high. Our crane job cost calculator helps you add it all up. Get real quotes for rental rates.
Is it fair to charge more for storm work?
Storm jobs often carry more risk, odd hours and tangled, loaded wood, so a higher price can be fair. Be open about how you price, put it in writing before you start and avoid anything that looks like gouging. Some states have price rules during declared emergencies. Short explanation, not legal advice.
How much deposit should I ask for?
Many owners ask for a deposit on large jobs or jobs that need a crane or rented equipment, to cover upfront costs and protect the date. Set an amount that covers what you spend before the work starts. Put the deposit and refund terms in writing. Our job deposit calculator helps you pick a number.
Should I put a price list on my website?
Exact prices are hard to post because every tree and site is different. A middle path is to list what affects the price and to say that estimates are free or low cost. Some owners show starting prices for simple jobs like small stump grinding. Do what helps homeowners call you, not shop only on price.
How can I send estimates faster?
Use a standard template, take photos on site, and price common jobs from your own price guide. Send the estimate the same day if you can. The faster the homeowner gets a clear written price, the less time they have to call someone else. Our estimate template and price guide builder help.
What should a written tree estimate include?
List the trees and the work for each, cleanup and haul-away, stump work if included, the price, payment terms, any deposit and what is not included. Note risks like nearby structures. Include your business name, contact details and proof of insurance on request. Clear scope prevents arguments later.
